ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say they are investigating a fatal shooting that happened during a criminal domestic violence incident in Orangeburg County that left a 24-year-old man dead.
Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell says deputies were called to a home on Woodford Road at 1:37 a.m. on Sunday for a man who had been shot.
"Our investigation indicates the 24-year-old man became angry when he located paperwork in a 23-year-old woman's purse from another jurisdiction where the man was listed as a suspect," said Sheriff Leroy Ravenell."When the couple started arguing, the woman wanted to make a call to have her mother pick her up but the man refused her access to the phone."
A report states that the woman made it out of the house to the yard in an attempt to get away, but the man drug her back inside.
The sheriff's office says once inside the home, the man struck the woman in the back of her head and threw her to the floor. According to an incident report, the man's grandfather came out of his bedroom and told his grandson to stop hitting her and to leave the house.
Investigators say the woman found a handgun in the home to make the man leave, and fired one shot striking a cordless drill.
Authorities say the man charged and grabbed the woman and he was shot in the abdomen.
The sheriff's office is continuing the investigation.
