AWENDAW, SC (WCSC) - Charleston County deputies say a hunter was accidentally shot in the arm early Tuesday morning after his gun went off when he fell out of a tree stand.
Authorities say the incident happened around 1:30 a.m. off Halfway Creek Road in Awendaw.
According to an incident report, the victim told deputies he was in a tree stand with a 20-gauge shotgun. When he fell out of the stand, the shotgun went off, shooting multiple pellets into his right upper bicep. He also suffered a head injury.
The victim's cousin said the injured hunter walked home and asked her to drive him to the hospital. She instead called EMS.
Officials say the victim was transported to a hospital by helicopter due to his head injury.
The report states officers were not able to find the hunter's shotgun, and a search of three nearby tree stands did not produce evidence of the accident.
No word on the hunter's condition.
