RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A national political committee with strong tea party connections has put its support behind Greg Brannon in the Republican U.S. Senate primary in North Carolina.

FreedomWorks PAC announced Tuesday its endorsement of Brannon, a Cary obstetrician who already has the backing of tea party favorite Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky. FreedomWorks also has a grassroots network that could help Brannon in the months leading up to the May 6 primary.

The group says in a release that Brannon is the clear choice when it comes to preserving individual freedom and reining in government spending.

At least six Republicans are seeking the party's nomination and the chance to take on Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan. They include state House Speaker Thom Tillis and the Rev. Mark Harris.
