SC Ports receive clean air award from state

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Ports Authority is being honored by the Department of Health and Environmental Control with a clean air award.

The authority has been offering incentives to truck drivers to help them buy newer, more fuel efficient trucks. The port's cranes that move cargo from ships to shore are now electrified.

The agency last year opened its inland port in Greer which during its first year of operation is expected to mean 25,000 fewer truck trips on busy Interstate 26 between the mountains and Charleston.

Charleston environmental attorney Blan Holman said Wednesday that under a 2010 agreement ending a lawsuit brought by the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League, the authority agreed to monitor and reduce emissions from its operations.
