Showers move in Saturday, then winter weather next week?

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

While Friday started out cold, it will warm throughout the day and only see partly cloudy skies.

Highs will reach the low 50s in the Upstate and 40s for the mountains. Friday night clouds will increase, then a few showers will be possible in the Upstate on Saturday morning, while the mountains will see primarily light snow.

The weather should quickly clear on Saturday afternoon and highs will reach the mid 50s for the Upstate and around 50 in the mountains.

Sunday should be breezy and mild with highs near 60 for the Upstate and around 50 in the mountains. But cooler air will settle in for next week, and then things get interesting.

A cold air wedge will take shape, which is when a shallow layer of cold air sets up across the area. A low will develop to the south and help to feed moisture into the Carolinas and Georgia late Tuesday into Wednesday.

Right now, it looks like there could be periods of freezing rain, thanks to the shallow nature of the cold air. While some models have suggested that a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain will be a possibility as some deeper cold air works in.

It will be really hard to pin down the precipitation type before the weekend, but the forecast will be made more clear over the next few days. Wednesday's system has the potential to be a significant storm, depending on the track of the low and the erosion (or lack thereof) of the cold air wedge (or cold air damming).
