CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A Charleston Police Department K-9 has received some extra protection thanks to a Charleston couple who say they were inspired to help after watching a local newscast.
Paul and Catherine Welborn recently donated a $1,000 bullet proof vest for a police K-9. The vest will be worn by K-9 Orrie, who has been with the department since June 2013.
According to a release, the Welborns were watching a local newscast last year when they saw someone who had purchased a bullet proof vest for a police K-9.
The couple reached out to the Charleston Police Department and spoke with Lt. Michael Thomas, supervisor of the K-9 Unit, about wanting to help protect a K-9 officer.
"This is the first time a citizen has donated a bullet proof vest for one of our K-9's," said Lt. Thomas. "I think it's wonderful that he will be protected just like any other officer."
The Welborns, who say they will encourage their friends to also donate vests, are very happy they were able to help.
"I was so excited when we got the vest," said Mrs. Welborn. "Orrie is such a beautiful dog."
