Under construction: Laing students turn construction zone into classroom

Hard hats and hammers.

What sounds like a construction zone was actually a classroom for students at Laing Middle School of Science and Technology.

Thursday, students began construction on nine greenhouses after months of planning.  The designs were required to meet specific requirements for budget, growing space, irrigation, structural strength, and wind resistance.

The project is part of the STEM initiative, which is designed to use hands-on experiences to enhance instruction in science, technology, engineering, and math.

"What it's doing is developing meaning to what they're learning in the classroom," said principal Jay Whitehair.  "They're able to apply what's happening in the classroom to a product outside here in a real world concept."

"We're still learning, but this is a super fun way to learn," added sixth grade student Kayla Bartemeyer.

Once completed, students will use the greenhouses to grow a variety of plants and vegetables.
