CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The trial for a former Charleston banker accused of trying to hire a hit man to kill his wife has begun.
Opening statements began in federal court on Monday for the trial of Chris Latham, who has been locked up since his arrest in August when his wife and daughter begged a judge for Latham to stay behind bars.
Prosecutor Nathan Williams painted a picture of a bank executive who didn't want the expense of divorce and instead with his girlfriend turned to the idea of murder.
But Latham's attorney painted the government's key witness as a liar. That witness is co-conspirator Aaron Wilkinson.
The defense also says in none of the conspiracy recordings the government has is Latham's name ever mentioned.
Three other people, including Latham's girlfriend, are charged in the alleged plot.
A fourth suspect hanged himself in a Georgetown County jail back in June.
Nancy Latham is also expected to testify for the prosecution.
