CURRIE, NC (WECT) – Democrats and Republicans might have company as they run to succeed Mike McIntyre as North Carolina's 7th District Representative in Congress. Fred E. Walker of Currie is circulating a petition to get on the November ballot as an Independent candidate.

"I just got tired of waiting for people to run who I felt I could really support," Walker said in a phone interview. "I don't like the abuse of the Constitution that Congress and the Executive Branch are using." Walker also said he opposes the current tax structure, and favors a Fair Tax plan instead.

Walker, who will be 61 years old this week, says he has lived in the "Wilmington area" for nearly all of his life. He currently works as an inspector for nuclear power plants. He has been married for 41 years, with two grown children.

This is Walker's first entry into the world of politics, and he admits that he has some work to do. North Carolina law says Walker's petition "must be signed by qualified voters of the district equal in number to four percent (4%) of the total number of registered voters in the district" as of January 1, 2014.  According to the State Board of Elections, that number for District 7 would be 19,743 signatures, and the petition would have to be turned in to the SBOE by June 27, 2014 (the last Friday of June).

When asked if he is close to securing enough signatures, Walker replied "I have a long way to go".

Former state Senators David Rouzer and Woody White plan to run for the GOP nomination in District 7, along with newcomer Chris Andrade of Fayetteville. Former candidate Will Breazeale has also expressed interest in entering that primary race. The only Democrat to commit to a campaign is Jonathan Barfield, a current commissioner from New Hanover County.
