Red Cross opens shelters in Dorchester, Berkeley counties

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The Red Cross has opened shelters in Dorchester and Berkeley counties due to the winter weather.

The following shelters will be open at 7 p.m. and remain open as long as needed. 

Berkeley Middle School at 320 North Live Oak Drive, Monks Corner

Cain Bay Middle School at Cane Bay Blvd, Summerville

Summerville High School at 1101 Boone Hill Road, Summerville

Officials with the Red Cross released the following information:

As snow, sleet, and freezing rain has made its way across the state, the American Red Cross is working with county emergency offices in multiple counties and is opening shelters in Dorchester and Berkeley Counties.  Red Cross is prepared to open additional shelters if requested.  

The following shelters will open at 7p.m. and remain open as long as needed.

  • Berkeley Middle School at 320 North Live Oak Drive, Monks Corner

  • Cain Bay Middle School at Cane Bay Blvd, Summerville

  • Summerville High School at 1101 Boone Hill Road, Summerville

The Red Cross encourages anyone coming to an emergency shelter to bring the following items for each member of their family: prescription and emergency medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and other comfort items. It's also important not to forget special items for children, such as diapers, formula and toys, and other items for family members who have unique needs.
