Harleyville business stays open despite power loss

HARLEYVILLE, SC (WCSC) -

Dark, but open.

As thousands are without power across the Lowcountry, one local business made the struggle a little easier by staying open despite the fact it didn't have power either.

Westbury's Ace Hardware in Harleyville lost power Wednesday morning but stayed open and re-opened again Thursday.

"It has been very tiresome," says sales associate Jason Pooser. "We've been going around the store trying to help people get what they need."

Even in the dark, business has been steady for the family-operated store. It has sold out of propane tanks, wood, water and charcoal.

"We're out of propane," says Stanley Lawley, the manager. "They're getting all the propane, water, batteries, flashlights, anything that can keep you warm, give you a light."

Lawley says the last time they lost power for more than an hour was during Hurricane Hugo.

"I worked here then, and we did about seven days of this same thing before we got power."

"This is what we do," says Pooser. "If we weren't here we would just be sitting at home. Might as well be out helping people."
