Ravenel Bridge open to traffic following 51 hour closure

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Ravenel Bridge is once again open to traffic after previously being shut down for more than two days due to icy conditions.

According to Charleston Police, Mount Pleasant Police, and the SC Department of Transportation, the bridge was found to be safe for traffic following a Friday morning inspection. The bridge was then reopened around 7 a.m.

Authorities closed all lanes on the Ravenel Bridge on Wednesday around 4 a.m. due to icy conditions caused by the recent winter storm system that moved through the southeast earlier this week.

The bridge remained closed due to ice build-up on the bridge's cables. As the ice on the cables began melting, large chunks of ice would then fall on to the roadway.

The roughly 51 hour closure resulted in major traffic congestion on I-526 westbound as an increased number of motorists took the Mark Clark Expressway to get off Mt. Pleasant.
