Gaul Lifts Stingrays Over Walleye in Shootout

Forward Patrick Gaul scored a goal and two assists and netted the game-winning goal in the shootout to guide the South Carolina Stingrays (31-14-1-3) over the Toledo Walleye (16-29-3-1) 4-3 on 2x2 Tuesday presented by Bud Light at the North Charleston Coliseum Tuesday night. The win snapped a five-game winless streak for the Stingrays.
 
The Walleye jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when forward Aaron Clarke tipped a pass from forward Aaron Bogosian between the legs of the Stingrays goaltender Max Strang (W, 21 saves on 24 shots). Former Stingrays forward AldenHirschfeld made it a two-goal advantage rifling a shot over the glove of Strang from the left-wing circle at 13:46. Gaul put the Stingrays on the scoreboard at 15:31 snapping home his 11 goal of the season under the left arm of Toledo netminder Jared Coreau(SOL, 30 saves on 33 shots). Forward Dale Mitchell picked up the lone assist.
 
Stingrays forward Peter Boyd tied the contest with a power-play tally 5:46 into the second period grabbing his team-leading 17 goal of the season with help from defenseman Luka Vidmar and Gaul.
 
Late in the third period, the Walleye reclaimed the lead off the stick of forward Philippe Lefebvre at 16:30, but the Stingrays forced overtime when forward Jack Downing lit the lamp with 33 seconds remaining to make it 3-3. Defenseman Drew Baker and Gaul added assists. The Stingrays outshot the Walleye 3-2 in overtime, but could not solve Coreau. In the shootout, forward Wayne Simpson scored in the fourth round and Gaul netted the game-winning tally in the final frame. The Stingrays finished the game 1-for-5 on the power play while the Walleye went 0-for-2.
