BERRIEN SPRINGS, MI (WSBT/CBS) - A 10-year-old boy who told his mom he didn't want a birthday party because he didn't have any friends now has friends from around the world thanks to a Facebook post.

Colin - who lives in Kalamazoo County, MI - has a disorder similar to autism and Asperger's. He will turn 11 on March 9.

Heartbroken over her son's dejection, Colin's mom created a Facebook page for him. People all over the world are wishing Colin happy birthday and sending him cards, including students at Berrien Springs Middle School.

"Happy birthday, Colin! I understand that sometimes life can be hard for you, but at the same time, I know that you are a strong boy who can overcome these obstacles," wrote seventh-grader Bea Penarebondo.

Mkenzi Gmitter's card offered some advice - hold your head up and enjoy your 11th birthday because it only happens once.

Their social studies teacher, Allison Arend, came up with the idea and let the students make the cards as an optional assignment.

"We have a lot of love here at Berrien Springs Middle School," Arend said. "We thought it'd be a way for Colin to receive some cards when he thought no one cared about him on his birthday."

But to these seventh-graders, it's not just about wishing Colin a happy birthday. It's about letting him know he's not alone.

"I know how it feels to be brought down by certain people, and you should never let one person try to make up who you are because only you know who you are," Mkenzi said.

Seventh-grader Max Dreher had this advice: "Trudge through, and if you really think they're not being nice to you, then ignore them."

This will all be a surprise to Colin when he finally turns 11. His mom is hiding all his birthday cards until his birthday.
