Mardi Gras season keeps dress and tux stores busy

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

From January to March, House of Tux on Pass Road in Gulfport looks more like a mad house.

"For gowns we probably see anywhere from 20 to 35 people per day," said House of Tux employee Emily Mays.

That's a huge difference compared to how many customers they normally see. With Mardi Gras being such a big deal on the Coast, every year shop employees prepare for this busy time.

"We really just try to be as familiar with our stock as possible, and we try to have a large variety of styles, sizes, colors."

Mays has been with House of Tux for three years, so she pretty much knows what styles people come looking for.

"We have a lot of people that are looking for lots of big beads, stones on dresses, along with big sequins."

Mays said just like prom dress styles change from year to year, Mardi Gras ball dress styles change, too. One thing that doesn't change is the men's traditional tuxedo.

"Also with tuxedos, we try to have a big assortment of sizes, that way we can pull things for people the same day, if needed."

Even though the male ball attendees may be a little last minute, the women try not to be.

"I came in about a month ago, tried on a dress, several dresses. They were super helpful and I tried on many and decided on one and we order it," said customer Laurie Pitre.

For most women, having a different dress for each ball is definitely a must.

"It's always exciting to shop for a new dress, and it's fun to get dresses up and go to a ball and dance and see friends."

Pitre's fitted, sparkly gown seems like the perfect dress for a fun night of Mardi Gras celebration.
