City Council considering pedestrian lane on Ashley River Bridge

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston City County council is considering on whether to continue a study for a bike lane over one of the Ashley River bridges.

The bridge connects downtown to West Ashley.

Pro-biking organization, Charleston Moves, wants to turn one of lanes of traffic into a lane for bikers, walkers and runners.

Some say that will just cause more traffic congestion.

Earlier in the day, council heard from more than a dozen people on the proposal.

Charleston Moves made a last minute public pitch for the bike lane five days before a crucial city council vote on the project.

The plans are to put the lane on the far right side of the bridge.

Some people are concerned taking away one of the four lanes on the bridge will cause even more traffic problems.
