CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Civil engineering students from around the Southeast are heading to Charleston with hopes of making their concrete canoes float.
The American Society of Civil Engineers' contest is scheduled for this weekend with canoe races slated for Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The canoes are built by student teams from colleges and universities and are judged on how much recycled material is used, the water resistance of the craft and the racing ability.
A tug-of-war also is set for the contest, which is being held at James Island County Park. The event is free and open to the public.
