Charleston County proposes design guidelines for future businesses in St. Andrews and Avondale areas

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) -

A future storage facility on Highway 61 in West Ashley has prompted Charleston County to propose some design standards and restrictions for the St. Andrews and Avondale areas.

The amendment passed its first reading Tuesday night. The overlay district includes Highways 61 and 17 from the Ashley River Bridges to Playground Road.

Council member Colleen Condon says land in the area would not be rezoned. She says some stricter guidelines for scale and height would be put in place. Condon says Extra Space Storage, coming up across from Mex 1, is on four parcels of land, all zoned for commercial use.

"It's completely legal under zoning across the county, but an overlay district allows us to meet with neighborhood leaders and existing businesses and allow us to say what's really the characteristic that makes the St. Andrews area, the Avondale area special."

The amendment must pass two more readings before it takes affect.
