Longwood scored in each of its first five at-bats to even the weekend series with the Charleston Southern with a 9-4 win on Saturday evening at Bolding Stadium.
Longwood improves to 10-10 overall and 1-1 in Big South play, while the Bucs fall to 14-6 and 1-1 in league play. The two teams will meet in the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Lancers had 16 hits and answered four early runs from the Buccaneers with three runs of their own in both the first and fifth innings to set up Sunday's rubber game. CSU had 13 hits, but left 12 runners on base including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.
Left fielder Kyri Washington was 4-for-5 and scored twice to lead the Longwood attack. Shortstop Matt Dickason added a 3-for-5 game and hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom half of the first as Longwood quickly answered the Bucs' run in the top of the first.
CSU's Bobby Ison and Chase Shelton both doubled in the top of the first to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead. Shelton finished the day with two doubles and an RBI.
Third baseman Brandon Harvell had a two-run double in the Lancers' three-run fifth inning to break open a 6-4 game. Dickason added an RBI single in the frame to cap the game's scoring the fifth.
Starter Tyler Weekley (LP, 3-1) took the loss, allowing nine hits and five earned runs.
Longwood's Brandon Vick (WP, 2-1) survived 12 hits and four earned runs in 6.2 innings of work to get the win.
CSU left the bases loaded in the fifth after drawing a pair of walks and getting a single from Zack Hagaman. Vick got a fly ball from Sam Remick and Nate Blanchard's line drive was hit right at Dickason to end the threat.
