College of Charleston baseball won two one-run games in a doubleheader against Michigan in the second day of the College of Charleston tournament at Patriots Point.

The Cougars (15-4) won a 3-2 game in the first seven-inning contest and then came back to win 4-3 in the second seven-inning game against the Wolverines (7-12-1).

The short-handed Charleston pitching staff performed valiantly, holding the Wolverines to a combined five runs on 12 hits through the two games. The Charleston offense had five extra-base hits and totaled 13 hits, led by Brandon Murray's four-RBI day.

College of Charleston starter Taylor Clarke (4-1) went 5.2 of the seven-inning game, scattering seven hits and allowing just two runs. He walked two and struck out one batter.

The Cougars jumped on top in first inning after a leadoff walk from Blake Butler and then a two-run homer from Murray, his fourth of the season.

Michigan responded with runs in the second and third inning to tie the game, spurred by an RBI sacrifice fly from Kendall Patrick and a solo homer from Travis Maezes. The Wolverines nearly took the lead in the fifth inning, but Maezes was thrown out, Glazer-to-Heidt-to-Butler, trying to stretch a double into a triple.

CofC did break through in the bottom half of the inning, using a leadoff double from Morgan Phillips and a two-out RBI single up the middle from Murray, giving the senior all three RBIs in the game.

Michael Hanzlik came in and recorded the final four outs of the game, striking out two batters for his fourth save of the game to win 3-2.

Michigan opened the second game with a bang as Maezes hit the first pitch from Derrick Smith over the wall for a solo home run.

CofC tied it in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI double from Champ Rowland, scoring Brandon Glazer. Rowland finished the game with two doubles and a run and RBI.

The Wolverines loaded the bases with one out in the third after two walks and a hit by pitch. However, Marlin Morris was able to record a strikeout and Chase Henry came in and induced a flyout to get out of the inning.

The Cougars took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI triple from Gunnar Heidt that scored Blake Butler. Wise singled to left field to score Heidt and put the Cougars up by two.

The fifth inning last nearly an hour with a number of emotional plays on each side and several pitching. The Wolverines scored two runs on an RBI double from Jackson Glines and a steal and errant throw from CofC's Erven Roper that allowed Glines to come home and score. The Wolverines then advanced a runner to second with one out, but Tyler Thornton induced a groundout and then struck out Ramsey Romano to keep CofC's lead at 4-3.

Hanzlik came back out in the seventh inning, still nursing a one-run lead. He allowed a hit and threw a wild pitch, but struck out a pinch-hitter and fielded an easy grounder to earn his second save (5) in a number of hours, giving CofC the 4-3 victory.

College of Charleston concludes the tournament with a game against Appalachian State tomorrow at 2 p.m. The game was moved forward an hour due to rain forecasts. Follow CofCSports.com and @CofCBaseball on twitter for weather changes throughout the day.
