The Charleston Battery has hired former Charleston Battery midfielder Troy Lesesne to join head coach Mike Anhaeuser’s coaching staff as an assistant coach ahead of the start of the USL PRO season. Lesesne has spent the last ten years as an assistant coach at the College of Charleston.
A native of Columbia, SC, Lesesne links with the Battery extend back to the 2001 season when he was a member of the Battery Super-Y program. After playing for the College of Charleston, Lesesne played for the Charleston Battery from 2005 – 2006, recording three assists in 36 games played.
Lesesne will be working closely with Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s technical staff to assist with the development of the players on loan to the Charleston Battery from Whitecaps FC.
Also on Friday, Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that striker/winger Omar Salgado has been loaned to the Charleston Battery – pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and USSF approval.
“Omar is a young player with a lot of potential and this loan is a natural step following two seasons with limited playing time,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson. “Our partnership with the Battery provides the opportunity for Omar to earn first team minutes, with a number of his peers, during this stretch of our MLS season.”
Salgado, 20, joined Whitecaps FC in advance of the club’s inaugural Major League Soccer campaign after being selected first overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. After appearing in 14 MLS regular season matches in his rookie campaign, a fractured foot limited Salgado to just seven appearances over the past two seasons.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound striker becomes the sixth Whitecaps FC player on loan at Charleston, joining midfielders Aminu Abdallah and Andre Lewis and striker Mamadou Diouf from the MLS roster, in addition to U-18 defender Jackson Farmer and U-23 striker Marlon Ramirez. Whitecaps FC MLS SuperDraft picks Adam Mena and Michael Kafari are also members of the Battery.
The Battery are set to open their 2014 USL PRO campaign on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. PT against Orlando City SC – a team that features former ‘Caps players Corey Hertzog and Brad Rusin. The match will be streamed live on charlestonbattery.com.
