Radford fights off Bucs in 12 innings, 10-9

CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston Southern rallied from a six-run deficit to force extra innings, but Radford scored twice in the 12th inning to hand the Buccaneers a 10-9 loss on Friday night at CSU Ballpark.

Radford moves to 12-9 overall and 3-1 in Big South play. CSU falls to 14-9 and 1-3 in conference play.

Radford scored two runs in the top of the 12th without the benefit of a hit. Radford's Chris Coia reached on an error by Bucs' shortstop Nate Blanchard to lead off the inning, and Blake Sipe was hit by an Austin Weekley (LP, 1-2) pitch to give the Highlanders a pair of runners with no outs. The Bucs would issue a walk to load the bases, then another hit batsman and a wild pitch by reliever Joe Pistacchio brought across Radford's final two runs.

CSU scored a run in the bottom of the 12th when Zack Hagaman singled and scored on a base hit fromAndrew Widell, but could not get the tying run across again.

CSU rallied with four runs in the ninth to force extra innings. Alex Tomasovich had a two-run single and Sam Remick added an RBI single as the Bucs came all the way back from an early 7-1 deficit. CSU tied the game on a wild pitch by Radford's Tyler Costello after the Bucs loaded the bases on a single by Bobby Isonand an intentional walk to Chase Shelton.

The Radford win spoiled a huge night for Alex Tomasovich. The Bucs' third baseman went 3-for-6 with five RBI and two runs scored. Zack Hagaman, Nate Blanchard, and Sam Remick all had two hits and each scored twice to carry the Buc offense.

CSU spent nine innings catching up after a slow start.

Aaron Scoville led off the Highlanders big first inning with a double to left center. An infield single from Josh Reavis and an RBI single from Alexander Lee started the scoring. Bucs' starter Tory Schroff (LP, 2-1) issued three walks in the inning, two with the bases loaded, and Radford shortstop capitalized with a two-run single to build the lead to 5-0.

CSU cut into a 6-0 lead on an RBI single from Alex Tomasovich in the third. His line drive off of Radford starter Michael Boyle (WP, 2-2) scored Nate Blanchard who doubled for the Bucs' first hit.

CSU shaved two more runs off the lead in sixth, again on the bat of Tomasovich. The Bucs' third baseman belted his first home run of the season to left center to cut the margin to 7-3.

The Bucs added a run in the eighth on an RBI single from Bobby Ison to cut the Highlanders' edge to 8-4.

Reliever Tyler Costello (WP, 2-0) picked up the win working the 11th for Radford. Nygeal Andrews came on to get the save in the 12th.

The two teams meet again tomorrow at 6 p.m. at CSU Ballpark.
