The South Carolina Stingrays (38-19-2-4) fell to the Orlando Solar Bears (38-21-2-2) 4-3 in the shootout on Military Appreciation Night with Lowcountry Harley-Davidson at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday evening.
The Stingrays launched the scoring 13:20 into the first period when forward Luke Greiner lifted a backhanded shot over the right shoulder of Solar Bears netminder Maxime Clermont (W, 33 saves on 36 shots). Forward Ryan Santana and defenseman Ryan Grimshaw registered assists. Seconds later, Solar Bears defenseman Bryce Aneloski tied the game at 13:36. Forward Dale Mitchell put the Stingrays back up at 17:29 capitalizing on a 5-on-3 power play with forwards Peter Boyd and Jack Downing.
Jumping on a 5-on-3 man advantage early in the second period, the Solar Bears struck at 4:51 with Aneloski’s second tally of the game beating Stingrays goaltender Allen York (SOL, 32 saves on 35 shots). Stingrays forward Peter Boyd made it 3-2 knocking a rebound past Clermont for his team-leading 22 goal of the season at 9:38.
Aneloski forced overtime with the hat-trick marker while on the power play at 6:13 of the third period. The Stingrays rifled five shots in the brief extra session, but could not solve Clermont. In the shootout, forward Wayne Simpson lit the lamp for the Stingrays while the Solar Bears slipped two past York for the win. The Stingrays finished the game 1-for-6 on the power play while the Solar Bears went 2-for-4.
