CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office say a deputy shot and killed a dog that attacked him on a highway in Awendaw.
On Monday afternoon, deputies responded to the area of Highway 17 and Highway 45 to investigate a report of stray dogs walking in the roadway and creating a traffic hazard.
The sheriff's office says a responding deputy attempted to remove one of the dogs, who had apparently been struck by a motorist, from the road.
A CCSO report states the deputy was then attacked and bitted on his forearm by another dog. Investigators say as a result of the attack, the deputy fired several shots at the dog, which was described as a pit bull.
CCSO officials say the deputy is being treated for injuries sustained in the incident.
"Like all use of force incidents involving our deputies, this use of force incident will be reviewed by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office," a press release by the sheriff's office stated.
