Officials from a waterfowl rescue group in North Carolina say an abandoned duck left on Lake Norman was attempting to escape an attack from wild ducks when it was mauled by a dog.
According to the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue out of Indian Trail, many ducks get abandoned around this time of year. They say people often buy them as novelties and "get tired of them when they get messy."
They say a female duck was trying to get out of the water to get away from the other ducks when a dog attacked it.
"Ducks who aren't raised around other ducks are offer rejected by wild ducks," Executive Director Jennifer Gordon told WBTV. "Sometimes they are drowned by the other ducks or just mated to death."
The duck, who is now being treated by the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue, is stable but has lot of cuts, bruises and a few deep puncture wounds.
