US Sen. Tim Scott draws primary opponent

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Republican U.S. Sen. Tim Scott now has a primary opponent in this year's election.

Randall Young of Greenville filed papers Thursday to enter the race. The filing period ends on Sunday.

Another Democrat has entered the race for Scott's seat. Former York County Council member Sidney Moore filed Thursday. Moore will be opposed by Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson in the June Democratic primary.

Scott has never run a statewide race. The former 1st District Congressman was appointed to the Senate seat in late 2012 to fill the unexpired term of U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint.

DeMint resigned the job to take a position as head of a conservative think tank.
