CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The recent donation of a bullet proof vest to a Charleston Police Department K-9 inspired a local businessman to give the gift of protection to two additional K-9s.
Clyde Burris, owner of Burris Liquor Store on Meeting Street, donated $1,763 to the Charleston Police Department for the purchase of two K-9 bullet proof vests. The vests were given to K-9 Dulan and K-9 Panzer, according to Lt. Michael Thomas, supervisor of the K-9 unit.
Burris said he was inspired to donate the vests after reading a story in February about a Charleston couple that donated a bullet proof vest that went to Charleston Police K-9 Orrie. That was the first time a citizen had donated a bullet proof vest for a K-9.
"I know criminals try to hurt them and they need to be protected just like police officers," Burris said. "They put their lives on the line just like a police officer."
K-9 Dulan is a 3 year old and has been with the department for a year, while 6-year-old K-9 Panzer has been with the department for 4 years.
"We appreciate the generosity of Mr. Burris and the dogs do too," said both officers who are partnered with the dogs.
