CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - As many as a dozen armed robberies in the last several months has Crime Stoppers increasing its reward to $5,000. Corporal Fred Bowie of Crime Stoppers says the suspects are typically hitting locations like pizzerias, convenient stores and fast food restaurants, most of them in the West Ashley and James Island areas.
Crime Stoppers released a flyer Friday showing surveillance photos from several of the armed robberies.
"They're using darkness as a cover," says Bowie.
He says the suspects have kept their identities well-hidden.
"We know how they dress. We know that when they go into a place, they're well-covered. They wear gloves. They wear ski masks."
The most recent robbery happened last Sunday at a CVS on Maybank Highway. According to the incident report, one of the two men had an assault rifle. Earlier in the month, investigators say two men robbed the McDonalds on Magwood Drive in West Ashley. Officials say another robbery happened at a Kangaroo on Main Road in January.
"We know that generally two of them enter the premises and commit the robbery. We don't know whether they have a vehicle staged in the area, whether there's somebody else driving the vehicle."
Bowie believes the suspects are local.
"I would think they're local because of the numbers of them that have been done. It's certainly not a drifter passing through or something like that and looking for some gas money to get to Texas."
