Suspect who stole patrol vehicle after leading deputies on foot chase now identified

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Officials say a patrol vehicle was stolen Sunday morning after deputies attempted to apprehend a suspect during a foot chase.

A release says Georgetown County Sheriff's Deputies were notified of mental commitment papers on an individual that walked away from the Waccamaw Community Hospital around 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Officials say the male suspect, identified as 35-year-old Camilo Quiroga Diaz of Surfside Beach, was later seen walking down Highway 17 in the Murrells Inlet Community of Georgetown. Reports say Sheriff's deputies attempted to take the suspect into custody when a foot chase ensued, resulting in the suspect obtaining access to the marked patrol unit vehicle, who then fled the scene.

According to reports, a vehicle pursuit continued from Georgetown County to Highway 904, west of Tabor City, North Carolina, where the suspect was then taken into custody by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

During the vehicle pursuit, the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the Horry County Police Department, Columbus County Sheriff's Office, and the north Carolina Highway Patrol, according to reports.

According to officials, Diaz is being charged with Grand Larceny and Failure to Stop for Blue Lights. Diaz is currently being housed at the Georgetown County Detention Center.

Officials say the case is under administrative review as to the sheriff's deputy's actions before, during and after the vehicle was stolen.
