Goose Creek high investigating after several students get sick

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - The principal of a Berkeley County high school is asking parents to keep sick kids home from school after dozens of students got sick.

Last week school administrators began to see an abnormally high number of absences in students from Goose Creek High School.

That caused them to start an investigation. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and other stomach-related issues.

At this time, the school does not believe the illnesses are connected to any contaminated food served at the school.

The school released the following statement:

Good evening, (Gator or Goose Creek High School) parents:
This is Principal Huskey.  Last week and today, the school has had an abnormal number of student absences.  Several members of our school community have shared that they have experienced nausea, vomiting, and other stomach-related symptoms.
Student safety continues to guide everything we do, and therefore we have reached out to the Department of Health and Environmental Control for assistance and guidance.  We have been notified that stomach viruses are currently prevalent in our region.  At this time, we do not have evidence that the illnesses are connected to contaminated food served at the school.  We will continue to work with DHEC to monitor the situation, and we have taken precautionary measures—including regular and thorough cleanings of the school’s classrooms and common areas—to limit the spread of germs and illness.
Furthermore, we ask for your cooperation.  If your child has a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, please do not send him or her to school.  We ask that you seek the advice of a medical professional if your child is exhibiting unexplained or serious symptoms.
Again, we will continue to communicate and work closely with DHEC to monitor the situation.  Please contact us at the school if you have any questions.
