Mock accident shows students real dangers of drunk driving

LADSON, SC (WCSC) - They look like near fatal accidents, but don't be fooled. It's all part of an event called "Operation Prom Promise," aimed at teaching students the dangers of driving drunk.

St. Johns Fire Department set up multiple mock accidents, with the help of numerous other agencies, at Coastal Carolina Fairgrounds Tuesday morning.

Then, 9-1-1 was called. Emergency responders took action, treating the scene like a real-life scenario. Students were hand-picked from the CERT program to participate in the event and followed proper protocol surrounding the wreck.

"We do it because there's many incidences where kids leave prom, drink and get into an accident," said Captain Chad Kelly with St. Johns Fire Department. "We're trying to prevent it by showing how it affects their lives and how it affects other people's lives."

After the accident, students will participate in a mock DUI trial. They'll learn the consequences of driving drunk. Real lawyers and judges donate their time to the cause.
