DANIEL ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - The upsets at the Family Circle Cup continued early Wednesday as 5th seed Sloane Stephens was sent home in straight sets falling to Elina Svitolina in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

Svitolina came out ready to go for the 10 A.M. start as she jumped on Stephens breaking her 1st 2 services and going up 4-1 in the 1st set. Stephens would come back to get to within 5-4 but Svitolina took the first set 6-4.

The 2nd set was much of the same story. Svitolina would go up 4-1 once again with Stephens fighting back to get to within 5-4. But again Svitolina put her away when she had to, to get a 6-4, 6-4 win and advance.

She'll face Belinda Becnic in the next round.

Not all the seeds were as unlucky as Stephens early Wednesday. 4th seed and former champion Sabine Lisicki advanced. Although she needed 3 sets to get past Vania King, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

3rd seed Sara Errani had a relatively easy day as her opponent, Kiki Bertens, retired after Errani had won the 1st set 6-3. Errani advances to face Shuai Peng who defeated American Madison Keys 7-6, 7-6.

In the late afternoon, Venus Williams needed almost 2 hours and a comeback in each set, but she advanced getting past Chanelle Scheepers 7-5, 7-5. Williams was down 5-4 in the 1st set before winning the last 3 games. Then got down 4-1 in the 2nd set before winning 6 of the last 7 games. Not to mention she did all of this while fighting what she called "a bug". She'll have to recover quickly as she'll take on 6th seed Eugenie Bouchard on Thursday at 1pm.

In the nightcap, there was no scare for 2nd seed Jelena Jankovic. She blew past American Lauren Davis 6-0, 6-3 in less than 90 minutes. She's back in action Thursday afternoon against Ajla Tomljanovic.
