JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

Charleston County deputies say the vehicle involved in an early Sunday morning accident that took the life of a 20-year-old was traveling an estimated 32 mph over the speed limit moments before driving off the road.

According to reports, deputies responded to Main Road in the area of Mary Anne Pointe and Chisholm Road Sunday around 3:15 a.m. in reference to a single vehicle, single occupant accident.

Officials say 20-year-old Madison Wheeler of Wadmalaw was traveling southbound on Main Road when she failed to safely negotiate a curve, went off the road and struck a tree.

A traffic collision report states her vehicle, a 2013 Chevy Cruze rental car, was estimated to be going 82 mph at the time of the accident, 32 mph over the posted speed limit of 50.

Officials with the Charleston County Coroner's Office say Wheeler was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries.

The collision report lists driving too fast for conditions, under the influence, and cell phone use as possible contributing factors to the accident.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office Traffic Division and the Charleston County Coroner's office are investigating the accident
