CofC's Phillips, Thornton Earn CAA Weekly Honors

College of Charleston’s Morgan Phillips and Tyler Thornton earned CAA baseball weekly honors, the conference office announced Monday.

Phillips was named the CAA Player of the Week, while Thornton earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were the first career conference honors for either player.

A native of New York, N.Y., Phillips had a spectacular week at the plate for Charleston, leading the Cougars to a 4-0 road trip including a weekend sweep at Towson. Phillips hit batted .474 with six doubles, a triple, a home run, seven RBIs and seven runs scored. Eight of Phillips’ nine hits went for extra bases as he slugged 1.053 for the week.

The sophomore outfielder went 4-for-5 with three doubles, a three-run homer and three runs scored in Sunday’s 8-6 triumph at Towson that completed the three-game sweep. Sunday’s game marked a number of new career highs for Phillips including hits (4), doubles (3) and total bases (10). He had already set a new career high with four RBIs in Friday’s game.

Thornton picked up his first collegiate win in the Cougars’ 4-1 victory at Jacksonville last Wednesday. A freshman from Taylors, S.C., gave up just two hits and one run over seven innings, striking out a career-high eight batters and walking only one.

In its first season in the CAA, College of Charleston has tallied two Player of the Week awards, two Pitcher of the Week awards and two Rookie of the Week awards.
