Birth mother of Baby Veronica drops federal lawsuit to overturn act

JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - The birth mother of Baby Veronica has dropped a federal lawsuit to overturn portions of the Indian Child Welfare Act, according to an Oklahoma newspaper.

The suit was filed last July, and claimed the Indian Child Welfare Act was discriminatory.

The act is meant to keep Indian children with their parents, and was the reason Veronica was taken from her adoptive parents on James Island and returned to her birth father in Oklahoma.

It was later decided the act didn't apply, and Veronica was returned to her parents on James Island last October.
