MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham made a stop in the Lowcountry on Tuesday not to deliver a campaign speech, but to honor an elderly man for his service to our country over 70 years ago.
The man is a highly decorated World War II veteran who had lost his wartime medals and never thought he would see them again. One day during a chance meeting with an admiral in a coffee shop, his daughter told the story about how her dad lost all of his Navy medals.
So, the admiral called Sen. Graham who called the Navy to get the medals back. The 91-year old veteran, Claude Clifton, was deeply touched.
Clifton went into the war when he was just 17. Senator Graham says Tuesday's honor was not only about restoring medals, but also about showing what ordinary Americans do in extraordinary times.
The ceremony was on the USS Yorktown in Charleston Harbor.
