BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office says a man attempting to sell counterfeit purses and clothes was shot by a potential customer at a shopping center in Bluffton.

Just before noon on Wednesday, deputies responded to the Coastal Carolina Hospital for a gunshot victim. When deputies arrived they found a man who was receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to his leg.

The victim said he was robbed and shot by a man in the area of Tanger Outlets on Fording Island Road.

According to authorities, the victim approached a group of three men in the parking lot of a gas station in Bluffton to see if they were interested in buying counterfeit purses and clothing that he wanted to sell.

A report states that the three men requested the victim to follow them to a more secluded location to discuss the transaction.

Authorities say the victim and his girlfriend agreed, and followed the subjects to the area of Tanger Outlets where they allowed the subjects to view the items in the trunk of the victim’s vehicle.

Investigators say as they discussed the deal, one of the subjects pulled out a handgun, shot the victim in the leg and stole the merchandise. According to the sheriff's office, all three subjects then fled the area in a light silver or gray older model Oldsmobile sedan.

Following the shooting, the victim was transported to the hospital by his girlfriend.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
