NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - It's a small project making a big difference in one North Charleston Community.
Thursday, the city of North Charleston unveiled a $375,000 addition to the Murray Hill Community Center and athletic field. Last fall, construction began on a new press box, scoreboard, concession stand, and restroom facility.
"We knew we met a need here that's been a tremendous asset to our program," said Recreation Director Ed Barfield.
Two years ago, the community was devoid of youth athletics at the facility or in the neighborhood. Today, Murray Hill has 135 participants signed up for its youth baseball and softball programs, and nearly 90 for its youth football program.
"A lot of inner city kids, just kids in general, they don't get the support of their parents," added Lerone Johnson, who spearheaded the community's baseball program.
"To have a facility like this, coaches and volunteers that care, that speaks volumes to the kids."
The Murray Hill Community Center is located off Bonds Avenue in North Charleston. The land for the facility is owned by The Charleston County School District, and will also be utilized for CCSD programs.
