NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - North Charleston Police arrested a pair of suspects they say they caught smoking marijuana in a car.

An officer on bicycle patrol spotted 18-year-old Lewis Hairston and 21-year-old Thanielle Edward sitting in a car outside an apartment building on Patriot Point Blvd. smoking what appeared to be marijuana, an incident report states. The officer said that when he approached the vehicle, he detected a strong odor of burning marijuana.

Police ordered the two out of the car and asked them if they were in possession of anything illegal and Hairston said he had a gun in his pocket, the report states.

Police say they recovered a semi-automatic handgun with a chambered hollow tip cartridge from Hairston's pocket after he was placed in handcuffs. The handgun's serial number had been obliterated, the report states. Police say Hairston said he did not have a concealed weapon permit.

Police say they also found two clear plastic bags containing a green plant-like material that field-tested presumptive for marijuana.
