CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston business man John Tecklenburg announced Monday he will run for mayor of Charleston in the 2015 election.
Tecklenburg, a commercial Realtor, says he plans to work with residents to craft a "common, long-term vision filled with new ideas to improve Charleston's quality of life," according to a release from the campaign.
"Together, we strengthen Charleston," Tecklenburg said. "It is up to all of us to create a new, shared vision going forward that involves all of our citizens. I'm a common-sense businessperson with a caring heart inspired to community service by my faith and the example of my family," he said.
Tecklenburg announced three priorities he would first focus on as mayor:
- Charleston 2020: "I will launch Charleston 2020, a new community dialogue to refine a clear and compelling common vision -- a blueprint, if you will -- for our city's future. We'll need everyone's ideas and everyone's involvement to make our City's future greater," Tecklenburg said.
- CitiStat. "I will launch CitiStat, an innovative management tool to make our city work better and smarter, and to be operated in a more open and transparent way. Most importantly, we'll use it to provide better services without raising taxes. CitiStat has improved cities around the country that have used this tool," Tecklenburg said.
- Infrastructure and opportunities. "I'll focus on improving both our physical infrastructure and advancing opportunities for our citizens in all parts of our city. We must repair and maintain our parks, sidewalks, drainage, and other parts of our public realm. In addition, we must work harder than ever to enhance opportunities for our people in education, jobs, recreation, housing, the arts and much more," Tecklenburg said.
Tecklenburg is a Charleston native and describes himself as a community leader with broad business and public service experience.
Prior to becoming a commercial Realtor in 2001, he was the City of Charleston's business advocate as its director of economic development from 1995 to 1999, and owner and president of Southern Oil Company from 1978 to 1995, the release states.
Tecklenburg is married with five children and is a graduate of Georgetown University, the release states.
Joseph Riley, who has served as mayor since 1976, said he will not seek another term when his current term ends. The next mayoral election is in November, 2015.
