Bond denied for man charged in toddler's death

A judge denied bond Monday for a North Charleston man charged in the death of his 17-month-old daughter, according to court documents.

Eugene Anthony Wright, 46, was charged with homicide by child abuse in connection with an April 16 incident that sent Payton Williams to the emergency room, according to a court affidavit.

Wright is accused of grabbing the girl in "an angry rage," raising her over his head and slamming her body violently to the hard kitchen floor, then left her and walked out the door, the affidavit states.

Doctors at MUSC's pediatrics emergency room determined she sustained "abusive head trauma," bleeding on the brain, swelling of the brain, retinal hemorrhages, and "extensive soft tissue edema along the entire spine," according to court documents.

The toddler died Saturday from the injuries, the affidavit states.
