Shoplifting suspect captured by observant officer

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Summerville police say a man attempting to run away after stealing 6 cartons of cigarettes from a N. Main Street drugstore was captured by an officer who just so happened to be passing by at the moment of the crime.

Police say 47-year-old Daral Brown was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest.

According to an incident report, an officer spotted Brown running from the CVS just before 5 a.m. "as if he (was) fleeing from the store" with something in his hands. A security guard at the drug store was running towards the officer while flashing a light.

The officer reportedly got out of his patrol car and attempted to make contact with the suspect, but the suspect continued to walk away while placing his hands in front of his waistband. At that time the officer pulled his gun and commanded the suspect to stop.

The report states Brown was carrying six stolen cartons of Newport cigarettes, which he grabbed from behind the counter at CVS before attempting to flee the scene.

Police say Brown ran away when he was told he was under arrest, and a foot chase ensued.

Brown was reportedly shot in the lower back with a taser during the chase, but continued to run. He was finally taken into custody after coming to a stop in a nearby alley.
