New app to take unemployment claims high-tech

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - A new app unveiled Wednesday by the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce will help the unemployed file claims from their smart phone or mobile device, the agency says.

The app, called iClaim, is designed to allow South Carolinians who have already applied for unemployment benefits to file subsequent weekly claims via mobile, according to a release from SC DEW.

"We are excited about this tool because it not only improves customer service and efficiency, but it also enhances DEW's robust integrity and fraud prevention efforts," Executive Director Cheryl Stanton said.

Its creation followed a 2013 survey of state unemployment claimants that showed 70 percent used a mobile phone to access the internet at least once per day, the release states.

The app will notify users on the status of unemployment claims so they can manage benefits on their device. Users can also receive customized job fair and hiring event alerts through the app, the release states. A search function will help pinpoint the nearest location where users can receive reemployment services.

The app is currently available on Apple iOS7 platform and can be downloaded by searching for "SC Weekly iClaim" in the Apple Store, the release states.
