Cops: Man walks out of store with nearly $200 worth of stolen meat, seafood in trash bag

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A 43-year-old man is behind bars after police say he stole nearly $200 worth of frozen food by placing the items in a trash bag.

The Charleston Police Department arrested Willie Wilcher of North Charleston on Thursday and charged him with property crime enhancement and parole violation.

Wilcher's arrest stems from an incident on Tuesday when officers responded to the Family Dollar on 478 Meeting St. for a shoplifting incident.

An employee said he followed the suspected shoplifter, later identified as Wilcher, out the store and into a yard on Nassau Street where he found the black garbage bag that the suspect was seen with in the store.

According to police, the employee found a variety of stolen goods from the store including frozen meat and seafood. Authorities say the stolen goods were valued at $183.

A police report states that the suspect was confronted by residents which confirmed the identity of the suspect.
