The South Carolina Department of Transportation says it will replace the Cypress Gardens Road Bridge in an "expedited manner" thanks to an Emergency Declaration signed by Gov. Nikki Haley.
"The Emergency Declaration signed by Gov. Haley on Tuesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the bridge collapse, was a significant factor in expediting the [Federal Highway Administration] emergency funding for SCDOT," acting SCDOT Secretary Christy Hall said.
The $2 million replacement project will take approximately 180 days to complete. Until then, motorists will have to navigate a 22-mile detour.
The SCDOT is investigating what led to the collapse of a 15 to 20-foot section of the Cordesville overpass near Moncks Corner on Monday night as a train traveled underneath it. Initial reports indicated the train was believed to have hit the overpass, causing the collapse, but the investigation has not yet confirmed that theory.
