CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A downtown Charleston middle school is among the "50 Best Middle Schools in the United States."
The Charleston County School District announced that Buist Academy for Advanced Studies placed 44 in
top 50 middle schools in the country.
“This is truly an honor to be named a top 50 middle school in the country and just affirms what we already know as a community," Principal Shawntay White said."We have some of the most talented students in the country and I am proud to be their principal.”
Charleston County Superintendent of Schools, Nancy J. McGinley added, “Buist has a long history of excellence. We applaud
for recognizing Buist and the caliber of its staff and students.”
According to officials at CCSD, Buist Academy was selected based on several factors including academic excellence, state assessment scores, received awards and rankings, and reputation.
A press release states Buist Academy for Advanced Studies is a K–8, county-wide, International Baccalaureate (IB) magnet school serving almost 500 students. Buist became an authorized Primary Years Programme IB World School in February 2006 and also is a certified Middle Year Programme since September 2010.
"Buist students begin French or Spanish in kindergarten and continue studying that language until graduation," a CCSD release stated."The rest of the curriculum is divided into themes to foster critical thinking skills in humanities, the sciences, mathematics, the Arts, technology and physical education. After-school activities include karate, dance, guitar, and chess, among others. Sports are operated through local recreation departments."
