Orangeburg business owners arrested after 35 poker machines seized

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell announced the arrest of three business owners after deputies found 35 illegal video poker machines at three businesses.

Investigators arrested 65-year-old Thomas D. Smoak, 68-year-old Dennis Wilbert Knauer and 41-year-old John Herbert Mauldin on Friday.

According to Ravenell, officers located the illegal machines at Tommy's Crossroads Lounge in Orangeburg, and the Oasis Lounge and Fantasy Land both in Santee.

In addition, authorities say nearly $6,000 in cash was located inside the machines before they were removed from the businesses.

Ravenell said each business owner has been charged with unlawful possession of a gambling device.
