Joint Base Charleston holds managed burn

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Natural resource officers at Joint Base Charleston are conducting a managed fire in the northeast corner of the weapons station.

Base officials say Tuesday's burn is being conducted by trained professionals. The burns are being conducted in cooperation with the South Carolina Forestry Commission as well as federal and local fire departments.

The burn is taking place Tuesday from 10 a.m. to about 6 p.m. Winds from the west should minimize smoke in the area.

The fires are set to reduce natural burn material in woods, enhance timber and wildlife habitat, restore ecosystems and suppress forest diseases and pests.

Officials ask that residents not call 911 to report the fires. Joint Base Charleston can answer questions about the fires at 843-764-7555.
