Ramping up efforts to bring second high school to Mt. Pleasant

The first steps of bringing a second high school to Mt. Pleasant will be in the works today. It's an effort that starts with the public's input.

The Charleston County School District work group is holding a public hearing to receive community input on the issue. Kate Darby chairs the district 2 committee and says the hope is to have a new school in place by 2019. The committee recommends the school have the capacity for 1,500 students.

Darby said that would help sustain the immense growth within the district.

"Our high school is growing," said Darby. "We get about another 100 students at Wando each year. So, right now we have about 3,700 students at Wando. And, Wando was built for 3,000. There's now multiple trailers at Wando. So, if we continue to grow like we have been growing, we're going to need a second high school."

The school would be located at the Wando South site, where the football stadium is located on Mathis Ferry Road.

Darby said the school district is open to the idea and the funding would likely come from one source.

"What the school district is looking for is to continue the one cent sales tax that we've had for the last 6 years," said Darby. "We voted on in 2010. So we did a referendum that was a 2010-2016. A capital plan and they want to continue that one cent sales tax for, I'm assuming, it's going to be another 6 years."

Darby said this is the first step in the process.

"We'll make a recommendation to the school board and then the school board is working on their referendum that they'll be presenting," said Darby. "Hopefully for the November election. And the voters would hopefully approve that referendum in November."

As for the name, Darby said she's not sure but she wants the school to have its own identity and be independent from Wando High School.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Cario Middle School. That's located at 35000 Thomas Cario Blvd.

Another meeting will be held May 12th at 6 p.m. at Moultrie Middle School. That's located at 645 Coleman Blvd.
