Petition calls for changes in state beer brewing laws

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - There is a new push to get more beer brewed in the Palmetto State.

A petition calling for state legislators to allow more craft breweries to set up shop in South Carolina has been created on the website

. Those who support the cause argue that more craft breweries would mean thousands of new jobs for the state.

After posting your first and last name, and email address on the petition, an email will be sent to legislators letting them know you want a change in the brewing laws.

According to the petition, Stone Brewing Company, a California-based craft brewer, could create 300 jobs on its own. The problem though, is current state brewing laws don't support the kind of operation Stone runs.

"No business wants to move to a state where it's illegal to do the business you engage in," said Horry County Representative Alan Clemmons. "Our approach has been 'brew companies, if you're interested in South Carolina, let us know we're on your short list.'"

Two laws have been proposed to make the state more brewer-friendly, but they may not be voted on before the end of the legislative session which is in a few weeks.
